A group of Republican lawmakers has formally requested that
the Department of Justice (DOJ) open an investigation into Democratic
Representative Ilhan Omar, following the release of records that they claim
provide evidence that the congresswoman married her own brother as part of an
alleged immigration fraud scheme.
The documents, recently released in conservative media, have
revived accusations that have been circulating for years surrounding the
Minnesota congresswoman, one of the first Muslim women to serve in the US
Congress. According to her critics, the alleged marriage to a relative was
intended to facilitate Omar's stay in the United States and, subsequently, her
naturalization process.
Republicans are calling for the revocation of the congresswoman's
U.S. citizenship if the allegations are proven. However, to date, there is no
conclusive evidence in judicial proceedings to support these accusations, and
Omar herself has repeatedly denied the claims, calling them political attacks
and disinformation campaigns motivated by her critical stance toward U.S.
foreign policy and her advocacy for progressive causes.
The Department of Justice has not commented on the request.
Analysts note that, although the accusations have gained visibility in
political and media circles, opening a formal investigation would require
verifiable evidence and not just records disseminated on partisan platforms.
