The Israeli army has launched its ground offensive to occupy
Gaza City, thus escalating the conflict in the Strip. After weeks of aerial
bombardment and artillery fire, ground forces began entering various urban
areas with the stated objective of dismantling Hamas's military infrastructure
and securing strategic control of key points.
The advance is characterized by house-to-house fighting, the
deployment of tanks and armored vehicles, as well as a growing presence of
snipers and reconnaissance drones. While the Israeli army claims to be seeking
to neutralize threats, the humanitarian situation is worsening: hospitals are
overwhelmed, power and water are out, and a growing number of internally
displaced people are seeking refuge in schools, mosques, and UN aid centers.
The international community has expressed concern about the
escalation, warning of the risk that the offensive could lead to an even more
severe humanitarian crisis. Humanitarian organizations denounce that the siege
and occupation of densely populated areas put hundreds of thousands of
civilians caught in the crossfire at risk.
The ground operation, which could last for weeks, opens a
new chapter in the conflict, with not only military but also political and
diplomatic consequences for the region and for Israel internationally.
