French police shot and killed a man armed with a machete
near a school on Thursday, local prosecutors reported. The incident occurred in
the northern region of the country when officers responded to reports of an
individual carrying a knife and posing a threat to passersby.
According to initial investigations, the man ignored
officers' orders to drop his weapon and attacked violently, prompting police to
open fire. He died at the scene. No students or school staff were injured, but
the area was immediately secured and students remained confined inside the
school as a precautionary measure.
The prosecutor's office has opened an investigation to
clarify the circumstances of the attack and determine the man's identity and
motives. Sources close to the case indicated that it has not yet been confirmed
whether the incident is related to terrorism, although authorities have not
ruled out any possibility.
The Ministry of the Interior praised the police's
"swift and firm response" to prevent a major tragedy and emphasized
that security around schools has been strengthened amid growing concern about knife
attacks in public spaces in France.
