The Department of Government Efficiency announced the
cancellation of more than 200,000 government credit cards in a post on X on
Tuesday.
DOGE, overseen by White House advisor Elon Musk, stated on
February 18 that it was working with agencies to simplify credit card accounts
and reduce administrative costs. It estimated that the federal government had
4.6 million credit cards and 90 million unique transactions in fiscal year
2024, USA Today reported.
A week later, President Donald Trump issued an executive
order to initiate a "federal spending transformation," which called
for a 30-day freeze on agency employees' credit cards.
On Tuesday, DOGE published its three-week update on canceled
credit cards, noting that the pilot program is auditing 16 agencies. The
Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of the Interior made
"great progress last week."
