House Speaker Mike Johnson is forming a new panel to
investigate the Democratic-led January 6 Committee amid allegations that its
members concealed or destroyed evidence exonerating President Donald Trump.
The original committee was led by Rep. Bennie Thompson
(D-Mississippi) and then-Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.). He was basically hand-picked
by then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).
At the time, he resorted to an unprecedented step by
refusing to allow the Republican minority to elect their own members to the
panel, prompting then-House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) to refuse
to participate at all.
Eventually, now-former Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger of
Illinois, who had also turned against Trump, joined Cheney on the committee.
