The United States government extended a ban on non-essential
travel along its borders with Canada and Mexico on Friday to combat the spread
of COVID-19, despite pressure to remove that restriction.
Through their political representatives, the US border
communities - which depend on buyers from Mexico and Canada - called on the
administration of President Joe Biden to lift the ban. For its part, Canada
recently began allowing the entry of Americans vaccinated against the
coronavirus.
However, the Department of Homeland Security tweeted on
Friday that restrictions on non-essential travel are still necessary to
minimize the spread of COVID-19, especially the delta variant of the virus. The
department extended the ban until at least September 21.
