Senators ask Biden to strengthen US-Colombia relationship

WASHINGTON, D.C. - US Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL), Bob Menéndez (D-NJ) and Tim Kaine (D-VA) were accompanied by 10 senators sending a bipartisan letter to President Joe Biden in support of the relationship between the United States and Colombia. The senators highlighted the importance of Colombia as one of the US's most important strategic partners in the Western Hemisphere and also highlighted the importance of our nation's continued support for Colombia's efforts to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. Earlier this year, Rubio, Menéndez and Kaine urged President Biden to prioritize access to surplus COVID-19 vaccines for Latin America and the Caribbean.

Citing the aggravated effects of strikes and national blockades due to issues of social and economic inequality in Colombia, the senators highlighted the importance of helping to safeguard human rights, democracy and stability in the region after the growing episodes of violence against protesters for part of Colombian security and armed civilians.
