The British government sanctioned for alleged corruption
an important adviser to the president of Nicaragua, Daniel Ortega, and
treasurer of the leftist Sandinista Front party, in power since 2007, it was
reported Monday in London.
A British government document included Francisco López,
former manager of the national oil company Petronic and former vice president
of the Nicaraguan-Venezuelan state consortium Albanisa, on a list of 22 foreign
officials implicated in corruption cases.
As vice president of the Albanisa company, López "was
implicated in serious cases of corruption and misappropriation," in which
"public funds were diverted to fictitious companies or inflated
projects," the official report said. The document accused Ortega's advisor
of "depriving the State of Nicaragua and its citizens of vital resources
for the development" of the Central American country.
