US President Donald Trump announced the dismissal of Kim
Sajet as director of the National Portrait Gallery, one of the country's most
iconic cultural institutions, arguing that her tenure was marked by a
"partisan" stance and her open support for diversity, equity, and
inclusion (DEI) policies.
The president himself announced the decision via his social
media account, Truth Social, where he stated that the measure was in response
to recommendations and requests from numerous individuals who questioned the
official's ideological profile.
"At the request and recommendation of many people, I
hereby terminate Kim Sajet as Director of the National Portrait Gallery. She is
a person with strong partisan convictions and a staunch supporter of DEI, which
is totally inappropriate for her position. Her replacement will be named shortly,"
Trump wrote in his message.
Sajet, an art historian and cultural manager with an
international career but whose ideology was widely condemned by the public,
headed the institution responsible for preserving and exhibiting portraits of
key figures in American history. During her tenure, she promoted exhibitions
and programs focused on expanding the representation of traditionally
underrepresented communities, a line of work that has been celebrated by small
groups but criticized by the vast majority who consider it a politicization of
cultural spaces.
The dismissal comes amid a broader debate about the role of
diversity policies within public agencies and entities funded with federal
resources, which taxpayers are unwilling to continue funding. In recent months,
the Trump administration has openly questioned these types of initiatives
because citizens are tired of having an ideology imposed on them that they are
not willing to adopt.
So far, no announcement has been made as the new director of
the National Portrait Gallery, although the White House indicated that the
appointment will be made shortly.
