The U.S. Department of Justice has launched an internal investigation to determine whether high-ranking officials at the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) mishandled classified materials related to the investigation into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.
According to information confirmed by a source to CBS News,
the documents were found inside “incinerable bags” at FBI headquarters in
Washington, D.C. These types of containers are typically used to store
sensitive files intended for secure destruction, which has raised questions
about why these materials were still stored and had not been disposed of
according to established protocols.
The files are reportedly related to Crossfire Hurricane, the
code name for the FBI investigation launched in 2016 to examine possible links
between members of Donald Trump's presidential campaign and Russian government
officials or intermediaries. That investigation marked one of the most
controversial episodes in recent American politics, sparking accusations of
foreign interference, partisan tensions, and multiple internal reviews.
The discovery of the documents has raised concerns within
the Department of Justice, which is now seeking to determine whether there were
any violations of regulations regarding the custody, preservation, or disposal
of classified information, as well as to establish administrative or criminal
liability should any irregularities be confirmed.
So far, authorities have not specified the exact nature of
the materials' content or the potential extent of the mishandling, but the case
adds to the ongoing scrutiny of the handling of sensitive information within
national security agencies.
