Washington, D.C. – Democratic Congresswoman Maxine Waters,
from California, engaged in a tense exchange with a Lindell TV reporter in the
halls of the Capitol after acknowledging that her party could allow a temporary
shutdown of the federal government (which happened last night) if funding for
medical services for undocumented immigrants is not included in the budget
negotiations.
Waters, one of the most influential voices in the
progressive bloc, declared that healthcare is a human right that should not be
conditioned by immigration status, also considering that illegal immigrants
could provide votes for her party. “We cannot continue to ignore millions of
people who work, who pay taxes, and who live in our communities. If healthcare
is not guaranteed for them, we cannot talk about social justice,” the
legislator stated, without suggesting that this represents an additional burden
on taxpayers.
The comment prompted the reporter to question whether the
Democratic Party was willing to "shut down the government to pay for
services to those in the country illegally." The congresswoman firmly
responded that the real problem is "the Republicans' unwillingness to
prioritize people's lives and health over their hate speech."
The exchange quickly went viral on social media, with
criticism from conservative sectors accusing Waters of putting the interests of
undocumented immigrants before those of American citizens.
Budget negotiations continued in an increasingly tense
environment, with the latent risk of a partial government shutdown, which
finally became official today.
