The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) issued a statement
Thursday regarding the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, founder of
Turning Point USA and a close ally of former President Donald Trump, who was
shot and killed at an event at Utah Valley University.
The federal agency described the investigation as a
"priority" and warned that the crime not only represents a personal
and political tragedy, but also an event that could have repercussions for
public safety and the country's political polarization. "We are working in
coordination with state and local law enforcement to clarify the facts,
identify the perpetrator, and ensure justice," the FBI said in a
statement.
The attack occurred Wednesday afternoon, as Kirk was
participating in a forum open to students and supporters. According to
witnesses, a gunman entered the auditorium and shot the activist in the middle
of the crowd, causing chaos and multiple injuries. Despite the efforts of
emergency crews, Kirk was pronounced dead at the scene.
The death of the conservative leader has sparked a wave of
national reactions. Republican leaders expressed outrage and grief, pointing
out that the attack represents an attempt to silence conservative voices.
Former President Donald Trump wrote on his Truth Social social media account:
“Charlie was a true patriot and a loyal friend. His loss is an immeasurable
tragedy for our country.”
On the Democratic side, several lawmakers mourned the murder
and underscored the urgency of taking action against the gun violence affecting
universities, schools, and public spaces in the United States.
Utah Valley University, for its part, suspended all academic
activities until further notice and opened psychological support spaces for
students and staff. Its president, Astrid S. Tuminez, stated that the campus
will strengthen security measures in collaboration with authorities.
