Rikers Island jail in NYC is undergoing a change of management due to years of constitutional violations
A federal judge has ordered the government to take over
management of Rikers Island in New York City, along with other city
correctional facilities, after years of constitutional and other violations.
On Tuesday, Clinton-appointed Southern District of New York
Chief Judge Laura Taylor Swain ordered in a 77-page ruling that the infamous
jail, along with the city's entire prison system, be run by an independent
official reporting directly to the court.
Swain determined that conditions at the jail remained
unconstitutionally dangerous, citing continued failures by the New York City
Department of Correction (DOC) leadership to implement court-ordered reforms,
Fox News reported.
