Chilean Senate approves a new extension of the state of emergency

The Chilean Senate approved a new extension of the state of emergency in the regions of Araucanía and Biobío, which are in permanent violence and that is experienced in this southern macro zone of the country.

Regions that are the epicenter of the so-called Mapuche Conflict, which confronts some indigenous communities with logging companies and also with Public Security forces.

The state of exception in Chile in these regions was decreed on May 16, 2022 and has been renewed since then uninterruptedly every 15 days, after the relevant vote in the Chamber of Deputies.

Since the state of exception was declared, according to official figures, violence in the state of Biobío has decreased by 41% compared to 2021 prior to this state of exception. While it must be said that violence in Araucanía has increased by 10%, so it is not clear whether more than a year of the state of emergency has worked or not, for peace in the region.
