Governor Ron DeSantis gave a press conference in Winter
Haven, Florida on Monday morning, April 19, in which he signed a riot control
bill, the Conservative Opinion reported.
The “Law to combat violence, disorder and looting and to
protect the forces of order”, also known as HB1, changed the definition of
riots and protests.
"It is the strongest law against riots and in favor of
the application of justice in the country, and there is nothing that comes
close to it," DeSantis told reporters.
The law grants civil legal immunity to people who drive
through protesters blocking a road, and it went into effect immediately.
The law also establishes a large category for misdemeanor
arrests during demonstrations, and defendants who fall into that category are
denied bail before their first court appearance. DeSantis said he wants to
dissuade people from returning to the ongoing demonstrations to do so.
It establishes a new serious crime of "aggravated
disturbances", punishable by up to 15 years in prison, as well as a new
crime of "intimidation of the crowd".
The bill also protects Confederate monuments, as well as
other monuments, sculptures, and historic sites.
