An institutional crisis has hit the prestigious Fulbright Program after all twelve members of the Fulbright Scholarship Board for Foreign Students submitted their collective resignation. The decision came in response to recent measures promoted by President Donald Trump, aimed—according to his administration—at correcting what he considers a failing international student system that has negatively impacted American universities.
In a joint letter, the board members announced their
resignation, effective immediately, arguing that the new guidelines represent a
break with the program's fundamental principles. The document states that the
board voted overwhelmingly to resign rather than endorse actions they described
as "unprecedented, impermissible under the law, and contrary to the
national interests and integrity of the United States."
The signatories also denounced the measures implemented by
the White House as undermining the mission and mandates established by Congress
when it created the Fulbright Program nearly eight decades ago. The board's
complete resignation opens a new chapter of uncertainty for one of the nation's
most prestigious educational and diplomatic programs.
