After years of investigation, FBI arrests suspect in bombings near the Capitol

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) arrested a man in Virginia on Tuesday, identified as the prime suspect in the placement of homemade bombs at the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and the Republican National Committee (RNC) in Washington, D.C., on the night of January 5, 2021, the day before the attack on the Capitol.

According to federal authorities, the individual—a Virginia resident whose identity will be released as the legal proceedings progress—was arrested during an early morning operation in the same state. The arrest represents a significant step forward in an investigation that has remained open for more than three years and generated intense public pressure due to the potential risk posed by the explosive devices placed at the buildings of both political organizations.

The bombs, found near the Democratic and Republican National Committee headquarters, triggered extensive security deployments and required the mobilization of bomb disposal teams, in an already tense atmosphere due to the protests and political unrest that marked the eve of January 6.

The FBI reported that it will continue to gather evidence and conduct interviews as part of the process to determine whether the suspect acted alone or as part of a larger network. The investigation will continue as formal charges are filed with federal authorities.
